How is your smartphone tested to make sure it’s safe and durable?

You rely on your smartphone every day, not just to make calls, but to browse the Internet, use social media, watch videos and play games. The last thing you want is for your phone to suddenly stop working. Of course, phones do not last forever, but manufacturers are spending more and more time using items such as NDT equipment, to test phones for durability and safety. After all, competition is fierce, so manufactures need to produce a good quality product.

When you think about it, smartphones do take a lot of punishment. How often are they dropped, or squeezed into the back pocket of a pair of jeans? Smart phones need to be as resilient as possible; this is where testing comes in.

Conducting a drop test

Dropping is one of the main threats to smartphones; you know how easy it can be to just lose your grip for a split second. That is all it takes. This is why phone manufacturers carry out a drop test on the phones they produce. Each phone is placed in a device which lifts it to a certain height above ground. The phone is then released. A tester then retrieves the phone from its resting place and checks for signs of damage. The internal workings of the phone are also checked, using a programmed computer.

Conducting a torsion test

Earlier in this article, we mentioned phones being squeezed into tight spaces, such as a pocket in jeans. You may have done this on more than one occasion. This type of action can put pressure on a phone. It’s this type of pressure that is the focus of a torsion test. Each phone is placed in a lathe which twists the phone around in order to see what the effects are. As with the drop test, the condition of the phone is checked once the test is completed. That is not the end of the story though. The test is conducted over and over again, to check the effects of pressure and bending on the phone, over time.

Checking the effects of overheating

Samsung is one of the companies at the forefront of tests for the effects of overheating, since it experienced problems with some of its phones exploding. Let’s face it; phones are often used even after they begin to overheat, so this is an important check. Actually, there are several tests for the effects of overheating, such as Total Volatile Organic Compound, durability and Delta Open Circuit Voltage.

You can see how much attention is paid to testing that smartphone you use each day. Manufacturing companies cannot afford for their phones to be substandard; if this is the case they will find it hard to survive in such a competitive market. Of course, all of this testing is important to you too. It helps to make sure you get a durable and safe phone to use.
