Selecting WordPress Plugins

April 22, 2008 Author: Chris T Posted in: Blog, Wordpress

The main reason i selected wordpress to power the new T3 was the pretty big plugin directory of wordpress. The plugin directory as i write this post serves more than 2018 plugins with 4.000.000 downloads. That’s pretty impressive but expected from the #1 blogtool in the world. Developers and authors deserve many credits but i can’t deny most of them are crap in my opinion always. After hours of searching, browsing, inspecting the plugins over the wp directory for weeks, i am left with a negative impression.

My bad impression comes from the fact that most of the plugin authors never heard the word “performance”. Let’s get serious wordpress plugin system is cool but for Pit’s shake the memory usage, is super hight. 9-11MB average with only 10 plugins ? Yeap that’s right these are the numbers in my case. People will say it’s not much but when you see some of the most successful php products out there like vbulletin or IPB to use only the half of that of wordpress makes you wonder. Maybe it’s me, i have adopted a way of thinking that says performance must be balanced with features. Read the full post

Seditio
Wordpress

There are many ways to do that. You can wake up one day and say screw my old site move on and leave everything behind including your precious content. That’s probably the easiest way to do it. In my case study i decided to leave behind the forums, the ratings, the downloads, and some other areas which were pretty much useless to me. But i wanted to bring into the new site all the user base, the pages with the categories and all the comments.

The biggest problem in opinion are the pages, you can easily import the text from seditio. The hard part is to import personal file space. I decided not to involve with that, after all my site had only 70 pages, no big deal but some other people might not be able to do that. For me with my 70 pages i needed 3-4 hours to re-upload images, downloads etc.

The script will import for you:

  1. The users, usernames, passwords, website, email, registration date
  2. The pages, if you ignore the pfs bbcode everything else works including my geshi highlight hack
  3. The only extra from the pages that has been imported are the views, you can later install the plug wp-views. The alias, downloads, ratings, keys, extra fields are gone.
  4. The comments, not much to say here except that all bbcodes are stripped
  5. The categories, everything except the hierarchy will be imported with no problem.

Requirements - How To Use

  1. Minimum php4, mysql 4
  2. All versions of seditio should work, but only v121 was tested.
  3. It has been tested only for Wordpress 2.5
  4. You must use the same database as seditio when you install the wordpress.
  5. Upload the file seditio.php to the wp-admin/import
  6. Through the Dashboard navigate to Manges -> Import and select from seditio
  7. During the first step you must specify the table prefix for your seditio installation e.g. sed_
  8. Moreover you must specify the user id of the first admin of your seditio site e.g. 1 Unless you want your new wp Admin Account to loose the registration date and the ownership of your seditio pages.
  9. Follow the next buttons and in 4-5 clicks and you are done.
  10. I have no idea how well this importer can do in large sites but in my case the whole procedure with 350 users 70 pages 20 categories and 65 comments finished in 10 secs.

If you are ok with all that you can give it a go, but I CAN’T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR SITE IS DESTROYED. If you want to try it do it on your localhost, after all i spend only a few hours just to import the absolutely necessary to my needs. Download Seditio To Wordpress Importer v0.1

My next problem was how could i save some of my old sections like Sed/LDU Tags HQ and the SED/LDU Files DB. Obviously you must study i can’t say it’s hard to write to plugin for wordpress but for me that i have got used to sedito system the beginning was hard. The wordpress documentation is cool but not super cool for devs. I guess if you want to call yourself a dev you must study yourself. I did my homework LDU Tags HQ , LDU Repository, Seditio Tags HQ, Seditio Repository.

The Future T3 Design

April 19, 2008 Author: Chris T Posted in: Blog

T3 Design 2008 New Logo

In one month T3 Design will be two years old …hooray…. I started this site by respect to the neocrome cms that i was been using for years. That time i wanted to offer things to neocrome community and the newly born seditio cms. Whatever i could skins, plugins, core hacks, general support and much more. As i was getting better with programming and designing my works got better and of course more popular, i think the almost 60K pages linking to t3 and me being part of teh Dev Team proves that. I admit that the Dev Team of seditio is not much, actually it’s nothing it just a title and nothing more.

After a year or so i started to produce some paid works with a fixed small price, some skins and plugs, i don’t think that move was much successful but from time to time i managed to paid my dedi server and put some gash on my saxo 1400cc. I don’t know but at some point things got worse, maybe i am a selfish bastard but i thought my work will receive more respect. Take a look out there some of my paid products are being redistributed, admins remove the small copyright tag from my free skins, other sed developers rip my works and sell them, ouch enough bitching…. Let’s get to the point.

After 2 full years of coding plugins and learning php/mysql i got to the point where i wanted to do more. I was being using sed for 3dacc.net as a main site and vBulletin as a forum. Oh many asked me how i did that but guh it was nothing really, having two engines working side by side is a shit work and specially hard if you want to get your users to be more interactive. 6 Months ago i decided to code my own cms for vBulletin based on seditio. What you see now here http://www.3dacc.net is the result. The idea was to simply transfer sed procedures to vb but after 12 major releases, the end product at least from the coding point of view is so much different, better if you ask me. I added features, remove things, took to another level many things and i am really proud for that. Except the basic structure list.php?c=xxx and page.php?id=xxx i doubt anyone can identify the mentor of vBSed, the sed from the look or even code. Read the full post
